Isnard

Jean Isnard is a French Postwar & Contemporary artist who was born in 1948. For many years now, Jean Isnard has explored the multiple possibilities of mat and shine, smooth and textured, transparency and opacity. His last « Altugas sur bois » amplify the delicate tensions between sumptuous materiality of wood magnifier and the fluid translucent light of the altegas. Light, transparence, shadows and reflections host since the beginning, the theatre of volumes and forms of Jean Isnard’s work.

His interest in working with wood stems from closely following restoration work at the Cistercian abbey of Reigny in Burgundy where he was able to retrieve some medieval beams which the restorers were replacing. This relationship between the old and the new and how the two can both blend together and contrast has strongly influenced his creative process.
